What is CoolSculpting?
The CoolSculpting procedure is a non-surgical alternative to cosmetic fat removal that freezes away excess adipose tissue. The FDA-approved procedure, with over 4 million procedures performed, was born from years of research, studying, and testing what is already scientifically known about the relationship between body fat and cold temperatures. CoolSculpting utilizes controlled cooling through patented Cryolipolysis® technology (a hybrid of the terms “cryogenic” and “lipolysis”) to isolate fat cells while leaving surrounding tissues unharmed. Over time, the treated fat can be targeted by the body’s natural waste system and you can see noticeable results in 4 – 12 weeks. (* Each patient is unique and individual results may vary). There are numerous advantages to undergoing the procedure, including minimal downtime, the ability to treat both the neck and body, and the effectiveness of the process by which the unwanted fat is targeted. Experience this state-of-the-art technology at Hudson Valley’s Laser & Cosmetic Surgery Specialists, PC run by Ran Y. Rubinstein, M.D.
The CoolSculpting Procedure – How it’s Performed
CoolSculpting is performed at Dr. Rubinstein’s Newburgh, New York plastic surgery practice. Patients will be seated in a relaxing reclining chair, and they are fully awake during the procedure. They may choose to read a book, use their cell phones, or enjoy another stationery activity during the treatment session. Once the device has been secured, a comfort pillow helps to maintain the position of the CoolSculpting applicator. The machine settings are predetermined, so Dr. Rubinstein and his staff will not need to remain present while the CoolSculpting machine treats the area fat.
The doctor and his clinical staff, who have all received advanced training at the CoolSculpting University, and have performed the most CoolSculpting procedures in the Hudson Valley in 2015 & 2016, will begin the procedure by applying a layer of cooling gel over the treatment site, covered by a thin film. The CoolSculpting device is then place over the area to undergo Cryolipolysis®. There is no need for anesthesia because the lowered temperature serves as a natural block to any discomfort that may be experienced. The temperature-control settings will be adjusted between 23- 41 degrees Fahrenheit to offer maximum benefit to the site. For reference, when the temperature of something is measured at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, it is considered freezing. Once the applicator has been placed, a vacuuming action will gently draw the targeted area into the device. After the tissue has been sufficiently secured through the suction action, the machine begins to cool the site. It typically takes about one hour for each area of the body to be treated.
Once the treatment is complete, Dr. Rubinstein or a member of his clinical staff will enter the room to remove the applicator from the skin. The suction is released, and the frozen fat cells will be firm and raised. This area must be massaged by the CoolSculpting professional to ensure the best aesthetic outcome and the greatest amount of fat loss.
Non-surgical area slimming through CoolSculpting is not a replacement for a weight loss plan, nor will it improve one’s health. It is best suited for individuals seeking to treat stubborn spot deposits of fat that have not responded well to diet and exercise. CoolSculpting patients should be aware that the treatment is capable of providing up to a 25% reduction in fat resulting in trimming sections of the body by a centimeter or more, but it may not freeze away inches. For even more dramatic results a second treatment is usually recommended 6 weeks after the first treatment. It is also important to note that CoolSculpting will not tighten skin on the body, though Dr. Rubinstein can prescribe different or accompanying cosmetic options for these needs, such as a lifting procedure, surgical skin excision, or laser therapy. Dr. Rubinstein and his clinical staff pride themselves on providing an honest and accurate assessment. Some patients are better candidates for weight loss, or surgery including liposuction and tummy tucks.
Because of the proven record of both safety and efficacy of Cryolipolysis®, patients can also undergo treatments to the submental area of the face (under the chin) and the neck. CoolSculpting trims the jawline to add more structure to the lower face, and it can eliminate fat pockets trapped within the neck. In some weight loss patients, or those who display signs of aging, much of the fat in these areas cannot be fully altered through a healthy lifestyle alone. CoolSculpting is best for patients with a stable weight, as those who gain weight may be vulnerable to regaining fat in the treatment areas. Patients who are not ideal candidates for CoolSculpting will be given surgical options including liposuction and neck-lift surgery.

CoolSculpting for Women
Male and female bodies are structurally different, due in part to different hormone levels and the way each gender stores fat. Women’s bodies have a higher fat content than men’s and they may then notice a higher instance of fatty deposits. Women tend to accumulate fat around their lower abdomen, flanks (also referred to as “love handles”), hips, thighs, and buttocks, which can be exacerbated by pregnancy. Another area that may benefit from treatment is not commonly addressed. Patients may not often view their backside, but the area around the bra band may store extra adipose tissue. Even when wearing a well-fitting bra, clothing may not lay properly across this region. A patient’s arms and thighs can also be affected by spot deposits, especially if she is overweight.
CoolSculpting can effectively treat any of these problem areas through just a single fat-freezing session, though Dr. Rubinstein usually recommends a second treatment for the best results. Those who are best suited for CoolSculpting will have a body mass index (BMI) below 30; a BMI over 30 is considered obese by national standards.

CoolSculpting for Men
Men tend to store extra fatty deposits in the upper body, and more specifically the abdominal region. Often referred to as the “beer belly,” a distended abdomen can cause a man’s frame to appear very large even if he is only slightly overweight. This is because we often associate the condition of one’s midsection with their general health.
Males can become especially self-conscious by the look of male breasts, though this condition is not uncommon. Noticeable curvature can cause a man to feel his look is feminized, and he may wish to achieve a more masculine frame.
The flanks can also cause a lack of definition, and both men and women alike may find that their underwear and pants fit better once treated through CoolSculpting. It is common that if a man’s abdomen requires a CoolSculpting treatment, the adjacent sides would benefit from fat-freezing as well. Doctor Rubinstein can address each concern during the initial doctor-patient meeting.

The Advantages of CoolSculpting
There are a number of benefits to selecting a CoolSculpting treatment plan for stubborn fat loss. Since 2010, when the procedure gained popularity, over 4 million people have enjoyed its benefits. Numerous studies have been published in medical journals hailing the lack of risks and the reliability of contouring that can be accomplished. More invasive methods of fat loss like liposuction can damage surrounding blood vessels and tissue and are typically more costly. Other fat removal treatments utilize a thermal handpiece to treat the body but have the potential to cause heat-related injury to treated areas.
Each area of the body to undergo a CoolSculpting treatment requires just one hour of a person’s time. During a lunch break, a patient can take pleasure in a quiet break where they are free to enjoy an hour-long activity while slimming belly fat or another region of the body he or she seeks to modify. Over a period of weeks, the transformation will be complete as the body metabolizes the fat cells that shrink and are eventually carried away by the lymphatic system, which is the way all fat is naturally targeted from the body.
Patient comfort during and after a CoolSculpting session is optimized due to the complete lack of anesthetic, needles, and incisions. Noninvasive techniques in cosmetic medicine have become more popular and convenient to undergo. Patients will not pay the fees associated with anesthesia and monitoring, and they can drive themselves to and from treatment. There will also be minimal discomfort in the days following CoolSculpting. Some patients report a bit of numbness or tingling and may have associated redness or bruising, but long-term issues are largely nonexistent.
CoolSculpting Frequently Asked Questions
What criteria ought to be utilized as a part of choosing a CoolSculpting Practice?
The number one reason in selecting a CoolSculpting provider is experience, skill, and honesty. Dr. Rubinstein has been a Top CoolSculpting practice for over 3 years in the Hudson Valley and most recently received this prestigious CoolSculpting Award.
What is the difference between Liposuction and CoolSculpting?
Liposuction is a plastic surgery treatment that requires anesthesia and a sedative. A medical cut, or incision, provides the cannula access to underlying fat, which is then suctioned from under the skin. Results are immediate, but there are some associated risks with the treatment, as well as side effects. CoolSculpting is not a surgery, and therefore does not require medical numbing, incisions, and fat is not disposed of during the procedure. Small areas of fat are frozen so the body can naturally rid unwanted adipose tissue from treatment sites. Liposuction is reserved for considerable amounts of immediate fat removal, whereas CoolSculpting treats small areas at a time, and slims less dramatically over time.
What is the cost of CoolScultping?
Most patients require two treatments for optimal results. On average the cost of CoolSculpting is about two thirds of the cost of liposuction for those having two treatments. Most patients opt for CoolSculpting because the procedure is safe, non-surgical with little to no downtime and results can be quite dramatic. Dr. Rubinstein offers frequent “CoolSculpting Events” where patients can watch live demonstrations, free consultations, and receive 20% off on CoolSculpting.
Is CoolSculpting Safe?
CoolSculpting has been performed for over 7 years, and millions of patients have benefitted from the procedure. Harvard-affiliated researchers created the technique, and numerous studies have since deemed the procedure both safe and effective. This contouring method is non-invasive and non-traumatic to the body. No serious or long-term effects have been noted in existing literature. CoolSculpting is precise in its application and delivers controlled cooling to the neck and body. Each session is monitored by expertly qualified aesthetic medical staff.
How long are CoolSculpting Treatments?
It typically takes between 60 to undergo a CoolSculpting procedure, depending on which area of the body is treated. If the patient requests CoolSculpting to multiple treatment sites, the treatment time will increase accordingly. Patients can resume their normal activities directly after a session, as there is no downtime necessary. This makes CoolSculpting the ideal “lunchtime” treatment option.
Are CoolSculpting results permanent?
We are born with a finite number of fat cells which increase in number until puberty ends. We gain weight when these fat cells expand. CoolSculpting reduces the total number of fat cells in the treated area. Treated fat will be permanently targeted from the body, but if a patient gains weight the remaining fat cells will expand reversing some of the results. Losing the weight will return you to post treatment form. If weight loss is not possible, additional treatments can be performed.
